Post-Adoption Projects
As we now know, adoption is just the beginning of a child’s journey towards attachment and healing. Adoptive parents can be faced with unexpected costs for medical, therapeutic and mental health treatments that are crucial for their child’s well-being after finalization.
Introducing Both Hands Post-Adoption Projects. These projects can be the perfect vehicle to not only raise funds for these costs, but rally the adoptive family’s community around them. To learn more about how a project works, please visit this page.
Project Criteria
In order to apply to complete a Both Hands project, an adoptive family must provide the following information:
- Documentation showing the child is adopted through private domestic, international, foster care or kinship. (In accordance with IRS guidelines, step-parents adoptions do not qualify.)
- Every family that applies must agree to our Statement of Faith and all terms and conditions included in our fundraising agreement.
- The adopted child must have been under the age of 19 at the time of any expenses incurred that the project will be raising funds to cover.
- Expenses must have been incurred within two years from their Both Hands application submission date.
- If a family is raising funds for ongoing post-adoption costs, they will be required to do another Both Hands project every 12 months for their fundraising account to remain "active" and still receive funds.
Raising Funds for Medical Costs
If a medical cost is covered by insurance, Both Hands can pay or reimburse the remaining balance for the expense from the funds raised with a valid receipt and proof of payment provided. If a medical cost is not covered by insurance, we’ll request a copy of their doctor's order and a letter from their insurance confirming the reason for the denied request. The intention is for these funds to cover specific needs rather than ordinary costs such as annual physicals and routine check up, which are typically covered by most insurances.
- Examples of eligible medical costs include:
- Medical equipment/ diagnostic devices/ wheelchairs/ cochlear implants
- Deductibles for surgeries like cleft palate
- PCP/specialist visits not covered by insurance
- Physical/speech/vision therapies
Raising Funds for Counseling & Mental Health
If a counseling or mental health cost is covered by insurance, Both Hands can pay or reimburse the remaining balance for the expense from the funds raised with a valid receipt and proof of payment provided. If a counseling or mental health cost is not covered by insurance, we’ll request a letter from the provider confirming the need.
The counselor/therapist must be licensed and encouraged to be Christian, but not required. Both Hands will also consider treatment facilities and residential camps that serve "kids from hard places" and have a reputable background. **Please note that these require prior approval by Both Hands on a case-by-case basis and treatment can only be provided here in the U.S.
- Examples include:
- Counseling sessions
- Residential treatment facility costs (U.S. based)
